The residents of Old Aleppo, along with merchants from its historic markets and representatives of government and local institutions, are sharing the joy of achievement with Syria Trust for Development: the opening of four restored markets—‘Al Ahmadya, Al Sekattya 2, Al Hibal, and Al Haddadin’. These markets join the previously reopened ‘Khan Al Harir, Sahet Al Fustoq, and Al Sekattya 1’, as Aleppians shake off the dust of war and destruction, transforming pain into determination and strong will.
Years ago, the people of Aleppo launched a development plan to revive the markets of the Straight Street, in a way that preserves the identity of the old city and restores the characteristics that Aleppians have cherished in their hearts and memories. Together, they embarked on this journey, each playing their part in a well-organized and coordinated effort, step by step despite numerous challenges, including the February 6th earthquake, the restored markets have stood still—just like the people of Aleppo—testifying to the precision and skill of the restoration work.
With the reopening of these markets, which include 142 shops, new opportunities for livelihood and income have emerged for hundreds of families worn down by war. As merchants and visitors return, the economic and commercial activity in these historic markets is revitalized, continuing the legacy of prosperity that dates back to the days of the Silk Road.
