The locals of Homs, expatriates, shop owners, representatives of local and governmental institutions, along with the chambers of commerce and industry of Homs, and the Syria Trust for Development, are all contributing to the ongoing efforts to revive the heritage markets after establishing the priorities and roles of each authority in restoring and rehabilitating over 15 ceiled markets, aiming to preserve their heritage and architectural identity while revitalizing the economic activity through the 980 shops that support more than 700 families.
This restoration process includes repairing the historical arches, maintaining the stone structures, rehabilitating the shops and their facades, and refurbishing the steel ceilings with proper coverage and insulation. It also involves repairing sewage systems, floors, sidewalks, and paving with asphalt, as well as ensuring electrical connections.
The restoration efforts are based on a detailed analysis conducted by the Syria Trust for Development, which involved scanning and assessing the current condition of the shops and markets. This analysis, which is a part of a community development blueprint, provided comprehensive information about the crafts, technical status, and types of ownership, and included the preparation of GIS maps and an automated data structure which guarantees the revival of each market, which is what what Syria Trust for Development’s work is based on; leveraging community resources and partners, and providing all possible facilitations to shop owners.
The implementation of the market restoration projects is part of an agreement signed between the chambers of commerce and industry in Homs and Syria Trust for Development last April. This agreement aims to revive the economic, communal, and cultural role of Homs' heritage markets in all their aspects.
